Dr.-Ing. Leonhard Birnbaum studied chemical engineering in Karlsruhe, and following a period of academic work at the Karlsruhe Research Centre, he obtained a doctorate.
His professional career began as a management consultant at McKinsey in Düsseldorf. After holding various positions –including at McKinsey’s office in Houston/ United States –he was Senior Partner for energy and industrial sectors.
In 2008, he joined the Board of Management of RWE AG. He served as Chief Strategy Officer and as RWE Group’s Chief Commercial Officer until 2013.
Since 2013, Leonhard Birnbaum has been a member of the Board of Management of E.ON SE. Initially in charge for trading and decentral solutions he later served as Chief Commercial and Chief Regional Officer. Currently he is in charge of all regulated businesses and energy networks across the Group. In addition, he also has responsibility for Renewables, Politics, Procurement and nuclear business (PreussenElektra AG).
Leonhard Birnbaum is married and has two daughters.
